These dinosaur bone fossil fragments come from the Jurassic period, 208 to 144 million years ago. Fossils are the remains of prehistoric life. To become fossilized, an animal must be buried quickly to prevent decay and must be undisturbed throughout the long process. Very slowly the dinosaur bones begin to change. Molecules from sand and mud enter the bones. The bones then turn into stone one molecule at a time.
